This is such a classic, 'downtown cool' look for summer -- a 'wife-beater' with a black bra underneath. And Gwen Stefani is such a 'downtown cool' type of gal -- and pop star-turned- fashion-designer.
Gwen wore this to a celebrity picnic in June 2012, an event to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. But it's a look she often sports.
The white shrunken tank top, modeled after a men's undershirt (or, it might really be an undershirt from the boys' department) is slightly sheer, so the sexy outline of Gwen's black bra shows right through it.
The tanks' scoop neckline means that the straps are closer together than a typical bra's wide-set straps, so they'd be hard to even partially hide. The bra straps are clearly showing on purpose -- and this is the key to looking cool when sporting this trend. Fully commit to the look -- you don't want it to seem like part of your strap is showing by accident.
Critics?
I honestly can't think of many ways to make this look better, or too many negative comments that any critics might have about this look.
Maybe wearing a bra with prettier straps would be a good idea?
There are lots of bras with pretty straps that are meant to be seen, adorned with bows, crystals, or lace. (On the other hand, there is something about the simplicity of Gwen's plain straps that pair perfectly with this tank.)
Also, perhaps some feel that this isn't a style that would appeal to everyone.
Why I Love It
It's a classic way to show your bra straps, and such an easy way to look stylish. And anyone can pull off this look, with ease.
You should never look like you're trying too hard. When your outfit looks effortless, it has that cool and hip quality look often reserved for celebs that have professional stylists to dress them.
This has that "I just picked this up off my bathroom floor and threw it on" quality that makes it so chic. And Gwen's striking red lipstick isn't a bad way to complete the look.
